1. ESSAY
I started this October newsletter back at the end of September. Somehow it’s now October 7th and it’s only now going out to you. I’ve just spent a week in London, the first half of my trip here. As usual London is very demanding and commands all my attention. In turn she treats me to great excitements, amazing people, fantastic parties, really fulfilling classes and a beautifully cultured life. It also treats me to concrete gray skies and rain that I’m not dressed for. For all these years of coming here, I’ve never gotten the hang of dressing for the fickle fall weather of old London towne. You’ll be able to get my gory details and impressions of the kinkier side of London in a series of daily dispatches at www.Alt.com about the London Fetish Weekend. (Yes, it’s an adult site that hired me to write about it – so don’t go looking there at work if you’re not supposed to!)
I seem to have an undying love of London, despite the killer exchange rate, for all its vanilla day life and kinky nightlife. It’s actually quite nice being here during the election madness in the States and the time of fiscal anxiety. While the headlines spell deeper gloom, Londoners are taking it all in stride with their trademark dry wit. It was the same with the tube station bombings, the Troubles and all the other challenges that try to knock the wind out of the Londoners. They just find ways to carry on. God love ‘em.
Curiously, however, I have noticed a lot more music from the 20’s and 30’s and echoes and re-dos of Tin Pan Alley in the air - music of tough times when folks found ways to enjoy life and find golden pleasures beneath the glitter of cheap tinsel.
The music just won’t stop.
